We Americans seem to always be in a hurry. We want everything right now, as evidenced by such things as fast food, diet pills (I came across yet another one the other day - Orovo!), and microwaves. I am, unfortunately, no exception to this “in a hurry” rule. In fact, one area of continued friction between my hubby and me is that I am too impatient to wait for him to finish saying what he wants to say. I am a quick, throw-it-out-there kind of talker, but he is much more deliberate and, therefore, slower. Sometimes I feel like it is taking him forever to get a thought out so, I am sorry to say, I often interrupt him.
While watching The Lord of the Rings the other day, a little clip jumped out at me in reference to this. Merry and Pippin were waiting on the Ents (tree-like creatures who serve as something like treeherds) to decide whether or not to help defend Middle Earth. Pippin got very frustrated because they were soooo slow. Treebeard (the Ent they were with) came back and said they’d just finished saying, “Good morning,” and, as Pippin said, “But it’s nighttime already!” Treebeard told them, “Don’t be hasty,” and explained that, “It takes a very long time to say anything in Entish, so we don’t say anything that isn’t worth taking a long time to say.” (That last bit is slightly paraphrased, as I can’t recall the exact wording.)
What a reproof for me! “Don’t be hasty, Rachel. It takes a long time to say anything in ‘Michael,’ but he doesn’t often say things that aren’t worth taking a long time to say.”
